Hanoi is undergoing a profound urban transformation, enveloped by dust, concrete, stone, gravel, sand and noise. Relentless development constantly reshapes the relationship between human-beings, landscapes, and their surrounding ecosystems. Throughout this urbanizing process, infrastructures and ecosystems continuously interact, co-exist, and restructure one another, creating a city in a permanent state of motion and change.
If one day Hanoi were to be remembered solely by its sounds, what would you hear? What will remain before the city’s sounds and memories shift once more?
We invite 10 art lovers to join an experimental workshop on listening, sound recording, and memory archiving.
Over 2 days, we will wander around the city together to record, edit, and build an acoustic memory archive of Hanoi’s ecology. Afterward, we will experience listening to and sharing the memories, emotions, and imaginations that these sounds evoke. With no visual guidance, each participant is free to imagine their own version of Hanoi, while simultaneously contributing to a collective memory of the city.
The workshop will be led by musician and pedagogist Nguyễn Nhật Minh, alongside artist and curator Đặng Thuỳ Anh. The workshop is free and open to everyone of all ages. No prior experience is required—all you need is curiosity, a willingness to listen, and a basic device with a recording function.
