Nguyễn Vũ Trụ’s art traverses between the internet and the street. For the artist, the internet and the street foster creativity. Vũ Trụ once exhibited at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts (when he set up a stall for a calligraphy painting series ‘Add–Subtract–Multiply–Divide’) or intervened in major museums’ archives via Instagram DM. There are several ways to refer to Vũ Trụ: a contemporary artist, road painter, streetwear designer, internet rapper, etc. But on top of all that, Vũ Trụ is pretty much confused by the meaning of love (like many of us).
So how does Vũ Trụ move between the Internet and public spaces? And why is this the beginning of a residential program?
In #Solo Marathon2023 no.2, we wish to share Á Space with audience and participants, as Vũ Trụ lived in a small coastal town in Australia called Wollongong in the past years and worked a blue-collar job to sustain himself. In his free time, the artist and friends built street altars from found objects. Passersby can pray in front of Vũ Trụ shrines, marking their encounter with experimental art-making. Though one of the shrines was destroyed by a passerby, this kind of incident is inevitable in their street adventures.
With this residential project, Á Space does not simply act as an experimental art space, but also turns into ★NáSA Space Station★. The artist will join Astronauts in a journey across 3 dimensions of subconsciousness, materials and the Internet.
As Vũ Trụ claims: “My artistic practice is a journey of self-discovery and development for me and those accompanying me. With this residency, I invite the Astronauts to make art with me and discover the space within our souls. I look forward to seeing how friendship and love fuel this adventure.”
Nguyễn Vũ Trụ is an experimental artist from Saigon, Vietnam.
Having lived between Vietnam and Australia throughout their life, Vũ Trụ’s cross-cultural experiences inform their art practice. Which explores the complexities of contemporary Vietnamese identity within the three realms of (1) materiality, (2) sub-consciousness and (3) the Internet. Their works are realized across paintings, videos, installations, and performances in order to explore personal and societal narratives intertwined with universal themes of love, death, fear, and solitude. With a touch of satire, the artist often draws inspiration from myths, sci-fi futurism, memes, pop culture, religion, and low-brow art.
In 2018, Vũ Trụ received a Diploma of Graphic Design awarded by the HCMC University of Fine Art. Later in 2022, they received a BA (Honours) in Contemporary Creative Practices awarded by Staffordshire University.
Vũ Trụ’s works have been exhibited in various solo and group shows across Vietnam with notable art spaces including: Sàn Art, Nhà Sàn Collective, Cù Rú, Á Space, HCMC Museum of Fine Art. Most recently, Vũ Trụ was an artist participant of IN:ACT 2022, a performance art festival within the framework of Documenta 15.
